Chapter 7
A Loom of Secrets
Elara begins to weave a new tapestry, but the threads seem to guide her hands, forming patterns that mirror the fragmented memories. The spindle lies nearby, a silent observer.
Elara sat at her loom, the familiar scent of wool and flax a comforting balm. Yet, today, the comfort was tinged with an unfamiliar unease. The spindle, that curious, ancient thing, rested on a small table beside her, its smooth, dark wood seeming to absorb the very light in the room. It was silent, yet Elara felt its presence as keenly as a heartbeat. Her hands, usually so steady, hovered over the warp threads, a tremor running through her fingertips.
She had decided to weave. To weave was to order, to bring form from chaos, to tell a story with every pass of the shuttle. But what story would emerge today? The threads themselves seemed to have a will of their own. As she reached for a skein of deep indigo, her fingers brushed against a strand of silver, and a flicker, sharp and sudden, passed behind her eyes. A fleeting image – a moonlit garden, a hushed voice, a feeling of overwhelming joy and then… a sharp, cold fear. She blinked, shaking her head, the image dissolving like mist.
Hesitantly, she began. The shuttle moved, the threads intertwined, but the rhythm was not entirely her own. The colours she chose were not the ones she’d intended. A vibrant crimson, a colour she rarely used for its intensity, seemed to call to her. As it wove into the tapestry, a new image bloomed in her mind: a woman with hair like spun gold, laughing as she ran through a field of poppies. The joy was so potent it made Elara’s own chest ache. Then, the laughter faded, replaced by a distant, mournful cry.
