Chapter 5
Threads of the Past
The spindle pulses with a gentle warmth when Elara touches it again. More memories surface, fragmented stories of her ancestors, their joys, and their sorrows, all woven together.
The spindle lay on the workbench, a quiet sentinel in the afternoon sunbeams that slanted through the workshop window. Elara’s fingers, still a little unsteady, hovered above its smooth, dark wood. She had put it away yesterday, tucked into a velvet-lined box, as if the mere sight of it had been too much. But the hum, faint as it was, had followed her, a persistent melody in the back of her mind. Now, it called to her, a silent invitation.
Hesitantly, she reached out, her fingertips brushing against the cool, polished surface. A gentle warmth bloomed beneath her touch, not the sharp heat of a fire, but a comforting, steady glow. It felt like holding a sleeping bird, alive and breathing. And then, it began.
Not a rush this time, but a slow unfurling, like a fern frond reaching for the light. Images flickered at the edges of her vision: a woman with eyes like deep forest pools, her hands busy with a loom; a child’s laughter, bright and clear as a bell; a storm, fierce and wild, lashing against a stone cottage. These weren't her memories, not directly, but they felt deeply familiar, like echoes from a distant shore. They were threads, fine and shimmering, reaching out from the spindle, weaving themselves into the fabric of her present.
