Chapter 12
Maeve's Gentle Nudge
Elder Maeve, sensing Elara's struggle, shares a folk tale that subtly mirrors Elara's situation, encouraging her to embrace her past, however difficult it may be.
The scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke always clung to Elder Maeve’s small cottage, a comforting aroma that spoke of quiet wisdom and time-worn traditions. Today, however, it was tinged with a subtle anxiety that Elara couldn't quite place, a feeling that mirrored the tremor in her own hands. She sat across from Maeve, a half-finished cup of chamomile tea growing cold between them, the silence stretching like a fragile thread. Elara had sought Maeve out, as she often did when the knots in her own mind felt too tangled to unravel alone. But today, the usual solace of Maeve’s presence felt different, charged with an unspoken understanding.
Maeve’s eyes, the color of faded denim, held a depth that seemed to see right through Elara’s carefully constructed composure. She stirred her tea with a slow, deliberate motion, the spoon clinking softly against the ceramic. “The spindle,” Maeve began, her voice a low murmur, like the rustle of autumn leaves, “it has a way of calling to those who need to remember.”
Elara’s breath hitched. She hadn’t spoken of the spindle, not directly, not to anyone. It sat in her workshop, a silent, potent presence, its smooth wood cool and strangely alive beneath her fingertips. Since its arrival, the fragmented images, the phantom whispers, had grown bolder, more insistent. She felt as though she were standing at the edge of a vast, dark forest, the trees heavy with secrets she both longed to uncover and dreaded to face.
