The spindle lay heavy in Elara’s palm, not with the solid weight of wood and bone, but with the dense, suffocating gravity of what it promised. It was a promise of answers, yes, but also a promise of pain, a truth so profound it felt like a physical pressure building behind her eyes. Her workshop, usually a sanctuary of soft light and rhythmic clatter, now felt like a cage. The vibrant wools, piled high in their baskets, seemed to mock her with their cheerful hues, so unlike the somber greys and blues that had begun to seep into her thoughts.

She traced the intricate carvings on the spindle’s surface, the tiny, almost invisible figures that seemed to writhe and shift beneath her fingertips.
