The spindle lay on Elara’s worktable, a dark, silent sentinel amidst the vibrant skeins of yarn. It wasn’t just old; it felt ancient, as if it had spun tales before the village itself had a name. The wood was smooth and cool beneath her fingertips, a stark contrast to the usual warmth of the wool she so lovingly worked. Lately, her hands, usually so steady, had taken to a nervous tremor, a silent rebellion against the calm she projected. It was the spindle, she knew, that stirred these ripples in her usually placid pond of a life.

Today, as she traced the faint carvings on its surface – swirls and lines that seemed to shift and reform with her gaze – something else stirred. Not a memory, not yet, but a feeling. A prickle of unease that snaked up her spine, familiar yet unplaceable, like a half-forgotten scent on the wind. She closed her eyes, willing the sensation away, but it clung like burrs to her wool.

Then, a picture flickered behind her eyelids, faint as a moth’s wing against a lantern. A small hand, much smaller than her own, reaching for something. A flash of bright colour, a sound… a cry? It was gone before she could grasp it, leaving only a hollow ache in its wake. She opened her eyes, her breath catching in her throat. The workshop, usually a sanctuary filled with the comforting clatter of the loom and the scent of lanolin, felt suddenly vast and shadowed.
