Chapter 7

The Hunger of Nothing

The Silence, having consumed Peter, turns its attention to Sarah. She feels its eyeless void, a palpable hunger for sound and existence. The realization dawns: Oakhaven is not merely abandoned, but actively being devoured. Her journalistic quest for answers has led her directly into the heart of a consuming nightmare. Sarah understands that the town itself has become the entity's feeding ground, and she is now its primary target.

The morning light, if it could be called that, did not so much illuminate Oakhaven as it did sharpen the edges of the nightmare that had settled over it. It was a light that bleached color, that leached warmth, that only served to underscore the unnatural stillness. I, Sarah Miller, a freelance investigative journalist whose persistent nudges had often found the rotten core of a story, pulled my rusted sedan to a halt at what was once the town limit. The doors, once grand portals to sanctuary, now hung off their corroded hinges, twisted like warped metal, gaping open like a wound. A morbid curiosity, a grim determination to understand, propelled me out of the car. My boots crunched loudly against the cracked asphalt of what had once been Main Street. The sound, sharp and distinct, felt like a sacrilege in this tomb of a town, an obscene interruption to the pervasive quiet.
