Chapter 10
Whispers in the Void
As the Silence closes in, its presence a suffocating blanket of non-existence, Sarah hears it – a faint, distorted whisper, a chilling echo that seems to emanate from the void itself. It’s a fragmented sound, perhaps a remnant of Peter’s last moments, or the collective echoes of all those consumed. The entity pulses, drawing nearer, its hunger palpable. Sarah braces herself, knowing the whisper is a prelude to her own absorption into the vast, silent collection.
The world had become a pressure cooker, the air thick and heavy, pressing in on my eardrums until they throbbed with a dull ache. Each breath I took felt like an effort, as if the atmosphere itself was being siphoned away, leaving only a vacuum in its wake. I stumbled backward, my boots sinking slightly into the asphalt that had moments before been solid, dependable ground. Now, it felt yielding, almost fluid, like the surface of a tar pit.
The void. It pulsed right there, where Peter Hughes had been. It wasn't a hole, not exactly. My own heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drummer in the encroaching quiet. I could feel it, the entity’s attention shifting, turning its eyeless, formless gaze towards me. It was a perversion of sight, a sensation of being perceived by something that did not possess eyes, a chilling awareness that pierced through my very soul. The silence it commanded was not merely the absence of sound; it was the absence of vibration, of movement, of life. It was a fundamental negation, and it craved more.
