Chapter 13
Episode 13
He's running out of time and then he goes through darkness to get on the boat to cross the sea
The familiar scent of pine and damp earth, usually a balm to Leo’s spirit, now pricked his awareness with a growing urgency. The Glimmerwings, creatures normally so eager to flit and guide, now darted with a nervous energy, their tiny lights flickering like anxious fireflies caught in a sudden storm. “Faster, Leo, faster!” they chirped, their voices a frantic, overlapping chorus. The sun, a molten gold coin, was sinking with alarming speed towards the horizon, painting the sky in hues of bruised purple and fiery orange. He knew, with a certainty that chilled him to the bone, that they had to reach the Whispering Falls before the last sliver of light vanished. The Guardian had spoken of a passage, a way across the shimmering expanse that lay beyond the falls, a passage that only revealed itself under the cloak of deepest night.
He pushed himself harder, his legs burning with a fierce ache, his breath coming in ragged, desperate gasps. The trees, once friendly sentinels, seemed to close in now, their shadows lengthening into grasping, skeletal claws. He could hear the distant murmur of the falls, a constant, rushing promise, growing louder with every frantic stride. He stumbled over gnarled roots, his heart leaping into his throat with each near fall, the Glimmerwings, a shimmering, ethereal trail of light behind him, urging him onward. "The tide, Leo! The tide waits for no one!"
Suddenly, the forest floor gave way to a sheer, inky drop. Below, not water, but a vast, obsidian blackness stretched out, a void that seemed to swallow all light, all sound, all hope. A faint, rhythmic lapping sound, like a giant, sleeping beast breathing, reached his ears. This was it. The Whispering Falls, not a cascade of water, but a silent, dark river that flowed into the unknown. A small, simple wooden boat, no bigger than a child’s toy, bobbed gently at the edge of the precipice, tethered by a single, faintly glowing vine. The Glimmerwings hovered near his face, their luminescence a fragile beacon in the encroaching gloom. "This is the crossing, Leo," they whispered, their voices laced with a solemnity he hadn't heard before. "The Shadow Sea. You must go alone now. The Guardians of the Night will guide you." Leo looked back one last time, a pang of longing for the familiar woods, for the distant village lights that would soon be visible from his window, but the pull of his mission was a stronger current. He stepped into the boat, the cool, slick wood a stark contrast to the rough, comforting earth. As he pushed off from the unseen shore, the darkness enveloped him, thick and absolute, the Glimmerwings’ lights receding like fading memories until only the faint, rhythmic pulse of the Shadow Sea remained.
