The ache in Elara’s nose wasn’t just a dull throb anymore. It was a sharp, insistent pulse, a tiny, furious drumbeat against the quiet expanse of her skull. It had been there for days, a persistent companion to her waking hours, and now, as she traced the faint ridge beneath the skin, it flared with an almost sentient intensity. She was sitting by the window, the afternoon light softening the edges of her small apartment, the city a muted hum outside. A half-read book lay forgotten on her lap, its pages filled with the adventures of a woman far more grounded than Elara felt herself to be.

It felt old, ancient, etched into her very being.

The room around her seemed to shimmer, the familiar lines of her bookshelf and the worn armchair wavering as if seen through heat haze. And then, a flash. Herself, smaller, younger, a sharp, guttural cry tearing from her throat. A struggle. Hands, rough and insistent, pulling at her. A blinding flash of pain, a sickening impact against her face, and then… nothing. Darkness.
