The rain had started as a gentle sigh against the windowpane, a whisper of moisture that promised to grow. Now, it was a full-throated roar, drumming a relentless rhythm on the corrugated iron roof of "The Daily Grind," a cafe that seemed to exist in a perpetual state of twilight, even in the middle of the afternoon. Elara had chosen it for its anonymity, its faded charm, and the convenient isolation that a downpour often provided. The air inside was thick with the scent of stale coffee and damp wool, a comforting, if slightly melancholy, perfume.

She’d found the address scribbled on the back of a faded photograph, a picture of a woman with eyes that held a familiar, unsettling intensity. Beside the woman’s smiling face, in a shaky hand that Elara suspected was her own, was the name of this cafe and a single, cryptic word: "Whispers." It was the first tangible breadcrumb she’d found in weeks, a deviation from the usual abstract anxieties that clung to her like a shroud. Her nose throbbed with a dull ache, a familiar companion that pulsed in time with the rain. She touched it gingerly, the skin still tender from the last phantom impact, though no one else could see a mark.

Elara huddled deeper into her worn coat, the fabric still holding the chill of the outside world. The cafe was sparsely populated. A man with a newspaper spread across two tables, his face obscured by its folds, and a young couple huddled in a booth, their heads bent close together, their conversation a low murmur lost beneath the din of the storm. Elara nursed a lukewarm tea, its bitterness a welcome distraction from the sweetness of her own unease. She watched the rain lash against the glass, each drop a tiny explosion against the muted light.
