The air in the room had grown thick, heavy with unspoken words and the metallic tang of something Elara couldn't quite name. It was the smell of ozone after a lightning strike, of old blood, of truths too sharp to be handled. Dr. Finch’s office, usually a sanctuary of hushed tones and plush comfort, now felt like a cage, the walls pressing in, the polished mahogany desk a barrier rather than a place of solace. Across from her, his usual placid expression was strained, a subtle tightening around his eyes that spoke of a storm brewing beneath the surface.

“Elara,” he began, his voice a low rumble, carefully modulated, “you’re not well. Your grasp on reality… it’s fragile.”

The words, meant to soothe, landed like stones. Fragile. Yes, she was fragile. But not in the way he meant. Her fragility stemmed from the cracks he himself had helped to widen, the fissures he had meticulously plastered over with comforting lies.
