The scent of old paper and dust, once a comforting balm, now felt like a shroud. Elara traced the faded spine of a book she’d pulled from the shelf, its title a forgotten whisper. It had been Silas’s suggestion, a cryptic remark about the ‘truth being bound in forgotten lore.’ She’d followed the breadcrumb trail he’d laid, a trail that had led her here, to this dimly lit study, filled with the hushed secrets of a life not her own. The room, belonging to a historian she’d been told had a tangential connection to the events she was trying to unearth, was supposed to hold the next piece of her puzzle. Instead, it felt like a meticulously arranged stage, every object placed with deliberate intent.

Her nose throbbed, a familiar, unwelcome sensation. It wasn’t a sharp pain, more a dull ache, a persistent reminder that her body remembered what her mind refused to, or perhaps, what her mind had been forced to forget. She ran a fingertip over the bridge of her nose, feeling the faint, almost imperceptible bump that had become a constant companion. It was the anchor to her fragmented reality, the physical manifestation of a wound that bled into her psyche.

She had come here with a flicker of hope, a fragile belief that the historian, a Professor Albright, would have left behind some tangible evidence. Silas had been insistent. “He knew things, Elara,” he’d murmured, his voice a low rumble that always seemed to vibrate just beneath her skin. “He collected whispers. And sometimes, whispers are all you need to hear the roar.”
