The forest floor, once a tapestry woven with threads of dappled sunlight and emerald moss, now held a muted hue, as if a veil of twilight had been permanently drawn. Elara, her small hand tracing the rough bark of an ancient oak, felt the change keenly. The air, which usually hummed with the quiet chatter of unseen creatures and the rustle of leaves in a language only the wind understood, was now hushed, expectant. She clutched the smooth, cool stone Pip had given her – a tiny shard of the Sunstone, warm with the memory of its former glory, its faint glow a comforting pulse against her palm. It was meant to guide her, a gentle beacon in this deepening gloom.

The whispering forest lived up to its name. Not with the boisterous secrets of a crowded marketplace, but with a murmur, a sigh, a breath that seemed to carry forgotten tales. The trees leaned in, their branches interlaced like gnarled fingers, and the shadows stretched, elongated and playful, playing tricks on her eyes. Sometimes, a patch of sunlight would burst through, impossibly bright, only to vanish as quickly as it appeared, leaving Elara blinking in the sudden dimness. The path, barely a suggestion of trodden earth, wound deeper into the woods, each step a descent into a world that felt both familiar and utterly alien.

She paused, listening. A rustle to her left, too deliberate for the breeze. A flash of colour, gone before she could focus. The pixies had warned her of the forest’s whimsical nature, its tendency to test those who ventured within. They spoke of paths that shifted, of illusions that danced just beyond reach, and of guardians who protected its deeper secrets.
