Chapter 6
Petals of Freedom
With newfound resolve, Nicole confronted Jaron, armed with self-worth and a bouquet of truths. The toxic petals of their relationship were finally ready to fall, making way for new growth.
The air in Jaron’s apartment felt thick, heavy with unspoken words and the ghost of a thousand arguments. Nicole stood by the window, the city lights blurring into streaks of neon through the unshed tears that pricked her eyes. In her hands, clutched with a ferocity she hadn't known she possessed, was a bouquet of sunflowers. Not the delicate, wilting kind she’d once brought home to Jaron, hoping to appease him, but bold, brassy blooms, their faces turned defiantly towards the light. They were a gift from Elara, the florist, who had pressed them into her hands with a knowing smile and a whispered, “These, my dear, are for you. To remind you of your own sun.”
Nicole had spent the last week replaying Elara’s words, the scent of lavender and old paper that clung to the florist’s shop a constant, comforting echo in her mind. “Love, like a garden, needs tending, child,” Elara had said, her voice like the rustle of dry leaves. “But what if the gardener is planting weeds, and calling them roses?” The analogy had struck Nicole with the force of a physical blow. For so long, she’d been so busy trying to be the perfect gardener, pruning her own desires, weeding out her doubts, and watering Jaron’s ego, that she hadn’t seen the parasitic vines he was wrapping around her heart.
The memory of Jaron’s latest accusation, delivered with that practiced blend of hurt and bewilderment, still made Nicole’s stomach clench. “It’s just… you’re so distant lately, Nicole. I feel like I’m begging for your attention. Maybe if you weren’t always so caught up in your own head, we wouldn’t have these… issues.” Issues. That’s what he called his late nights, his evasive answers, the faint scent of unfamiliar perfume that sometimes clung to his shirts. Issues that, according to Jaron, were always her fault. She was too needy, too insecure, too demanding. She pushed him away. She didn’t understand him. She was the one creating the distance.
