Chapter 5
Blooming Strength
Nicole began to see the pattern: Jaron's lies were a garden he cultivated, and she was merely a weed he threatened to pull. Her love for him started to feel like a cage.
Nicole walked through the park, the crisp autumn air doing little to cool the heat that still simmered beneath her skin. Jaron’s words, a venomous whisper disguised as concern, replayed in her mind like a broken record. “If you were just a little more… present, Nicole. If you didn’t overthink everything. It’s not that hard to make a man happy.” He’d said it with that signature tilt of his head, the one that usually melted her, but today it felt like a brand.
She’d found the text message, innocent enough on its own, a late-night exchange with a name she didn’t recognize, ‘Lila’. When she’d innocently asked, Jaron had exploded. Not with anger, but with a carefully curated disappointment that was far more effective. “You’re always looking for something, aren’t you, Nicole? Always suspecting. It’s exhausting. I’m trying my best here, and you’re making me feel like I’m walking on eggshells.”
And there it was, the familiar twist, the deft sidestep, the accusation that landed squarely on her shoulders. She was the problem. Her insecurity, her need for reassurance, her constant questioning – it was all too much for poor, perfect Jaron. He was the victim here, forced into… what? He never actually said what he was forced into, leaving her to fill in the terrifying blanks with her own failings.
