The scent of roses, thick and sweet, clung to Nicole like a second skin, a fragrant shroud that had once promised romance but now felt like a suffocating weight. Elder Elara’s words, delivered with the quiet certainty of an ancient oak, had replanted themselves in Nicole’s mind. “Sometimes, my dear,” Elara had murmured, her fingers, gnarled as ancient roots, gently tending a wilting fuchsia, “the gardener blames the soil for the weeds, when it is the gardener who has neglected to tend the garden.”

Nicole had stood there, clutching the small bouquet of freesias Elara had gifted her, the delicate bells of the flowers seeming to chime with Elara’s wisdom. She’d walked out of the shop that day with a lightness in her step that felt both foreign and exhilarating. The usual gnawing anxiety, the constant hum of self-doubt that had become her constant companion, had receded, replaced by a tentative curiosity. What if Elara was right? What if the fault wasn’t hers, but Jaron’s? The thought was both terrifying and liberating, like stepping onto a precipice with the wind at her back.
