The scent of freshly baked bread, a fragrance I hadn't realized I'd missed until it filled the air, was usually a comforting balm. Lily was tucked in her new, too-big bed, her breathing already deep and even, a testament to the security Ethan had somehow woven around her small world. I lingered in the doorway, watching her sleep, a fierce protectiveness surging through me. It was a feeling I’d almost forgotten how to access, buried beneath layers of exhaustion and a gnawing sense of being adrift.

Ethan was in the kitchen, humming softly as he wiped down the counters. The gentle rhythm of his movements, the quiet competence, had become a familiar, grounding presence. He’d been so patient, so unfailingly kind, not just with me, but with Lily. He’d built a bridge, not with words, but with quiet actions, a steady hand offered when I faltered, a silly joke shared when Lily’s eyes grew wide with newness. My heart, which I’d thought was sealed shut, was beginning to thaw, the ice cracks widening with each passing day. The past, the one that had left me bruised and wary, was slowly receding, replaced by the steady beat of a new, unexpected present.

“She’s a sound sleeper,” Ethan said, his voice soft, as if not to disturb the quiet sanctity of Lily’s room. He leaned against the counter, a faint smile playing on his lips.
