As Lily's bond with Ethan deepens, Mary Beth feels a shift within herself. The sharp edges of her past hurt begin to dull, replaced by a growing sense of understanding.
The late afternoon sun spilled through the living room window, painting stripes of gold across the worn Persian rug. Lily, her usually boisterous energy subdued to a gentle hum, sat cross-legged on the floor, her tiny fingers meticulously arranging a fleet of wooden animals into what looked like a very important meeting. Ethan was sprawled on the floor beside her, a patient, amused smile playing on his lips as he listened to Lily’s hushed pronouncements about the lion’s agenda and the giraffe’s role in negotiations. It was a scene so domestic, so achingly normal, that it pricked at something deep inside Mary Beth, something that had been dormant for so long it felt like a forgotten limb.
She stood in the doorway, nursing a mug of lukewarm tea, a silent observer to this unfolding tableau. A few weeks ago, the thought of her daughter finding comfort in the arms of the man who’d once shattered her own heart would have been a bitter pill to swallow. But watching them now, seeing the easy way Lily’s small hand reached out to pat Ethan’s arm, the genuine delight in his eyes as he responded to her chatter, the resentment that had been a constant, dull ache in her chest began to loosen its grip. It wasn’t a sudden, dramatic release, but more like a slow thaw, the ice cracking in imperceptible ways.
Lily looked up, her bright eyes catching Mary Beth’s. "Mommy! Ethan's telling me about the time he fixed the old windmill! He said it was a very tricky job, but he did it!"
