Chapter 4
A Glimpse of Kindness
Mary Beth observes Ethan's genuine patience and warmth with Lily. These moments of paternal care awaken a flicker of hope and a grudging admiration in her.
The scent of pine and damp earth, so familiar it was practically woven into my DNA, filled the air as I stepped onto the porch. It was a smell that had always meant home, but lately, it had been layered with the sharp tang of loss. My parents’ house, once a vibrant hub of laughter and warmth, now stood silent, a monument to memories. And here I was, back at its doorstep, with Lily clutching my hand, her tiny fingers a lifeline in a sea of uncertainty.
Ethan was waiting for us, a quiet presence on the porch swing. He’d been my parents’ caretaker for as long as I could remember, a steady fixture in the background of my childhood and teenage years. He’d been there when my dad taught me to ride my bike, and he’d been there when my mom brought me soup during my first heartbreak. He’d also been the cause of that first heartbreak, a betrayal I’d carried like a splinter under my skin for years. Seeing him now, his face etched with a kindness that still felt foreign to me, was a complicated ache.
“Mary Beth. Lily,” he said, his voice a low rumble that sent a shiver down my spine. He stood, his height a solid presence, and offered a hesitant smile. “Welcome home.”
