Chapter 20
Where the Past Checks In
The story concludes with Mary Beth and Ethan, now engaged, embracing their future. The house, once a symbol of loss, is now a testament to love, resilience, and a new beginning.
The old house settled around us like a familiar quilt, each creak and groan a lullaby of memories. Sunlight streamed through the bay window in the living room, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, a silent ballet that felt both nostalgic and hopeful. Lily, her bright pink butterfly wings still attached to her back from an earlier adventure, was sprawled on the rug, engrossed in a crayon drawing of a lopsided sun and a surprisingly accurate rendition of Ethan’s truck. Ethan sat beside her, his large hand gently guiding her smaller one as she attempted to color within the lines. It was a scene so domestic, so utterly peaceful, it felt like a dream I’d almost forgotten how to have.

The ache in my chest, the one that had been a constant companion for so long, had finally begun to recede, replaced by a gentle, persistent warmth.
Ethan looked up, catching my gaze. He offered a soft smile, the kind that reached his eyes and crinkled the corners. It was a smile that had taken months to earn, a smile that had chipped away at the fortress I’d built around my heart, stone by painstaking stone. "Whatcha thinking about, Mary Beth?" he asked, his voice a low rumble that always managed to soothe me.
