The late afternoon sun, the color of honey spilled on a dusty floor, slanted through the living room windows, catching motes of light that danced in the air. Lily, bless her little heart, was asleep on the worn floral sofa, her tiny hand curled around the tattered ear of Barnaby, her perpetually beloved teddy bear. The quiet was a balm, a fragile peace that had settled over the old house like a soft blanket. It was a peace I’d almost forgotten existed, a peace I’d desperately needed.
Ethan sat across from me, nursing a mug of tea, his gaze soft and steady. The silence between us wasn't awkward, not anymore. It was a comfortable space, filled with unspoken understanding, with the gentle hum of a shared life unfolding. He’d been here, in this house, for months now. Not as the caretaker my parents had hired, but as something more. Something I hadn’t let myself believe in, not at first.
My heart still gave a little lurch when I thought about how close I’d come to pushing him away, to letting the ghosts of my past dictate my future. He’d been the one to offer us a home, a sanctuary, when my world had imploded. And I, in my wounded pride and lingering hurt, had almost refused. He’d broken my heart once, a long time ago, and the memory had been a barbed wire fence around my soul.
