Ethan, seeing Mary Beth's complete trust and love, decides it's time. He plans a special moment to ask her to marry him, in the place that holds their history.
The air in the old farmhouse seemed to hum with a quiet contentment, a melody I’d almost forgotten existed. Lily’s laughter, a bright, clear bell, would often drift from the sunroom where Ethan was patiently teaching her how to identify constellations in the dog-eared astronomy book. He’d point to the sky outside the window, then to the faded illustrations, his voice a low, steady rumble that soothed both of us. Watching them, a warmth bloomed in my chest, pushing back the lingering chill of my past. He was so good with her, so natural, his big hands gentle as he guided her small finger across the page. It was a sight that filled me with a fierce, protective love, a love I was finally allowing myself to feel again.
One evening, after Lily had finally surrendered to sleep, her face soft and peaceful in the dim light of her room, Ethan found me on the porch swing, gazing out at the moonlit fields. The crickets chirped their nightly serenade, and the scent of honeysuckle hung heavy in the air. He sat beside me, the gentle creak of the swing a familiar rhythm.
“She’s a wonderful little girl, Mary Beth,” he said, his voice soft.
