The porch swing creaked a familiar, comforting rhythm beneath us, a sound as ingrained in my memory as the scent of pine needles after a summer rain. Ethan sat beside me, his arm a solid, warm weight around my shoulders. Lily, nestled between us, was fast asleep, her tiny hand curled around my thumb, her breathing soft and even. The moon, a sliver of pearl against the inky canvas of the night sky, cast long, dancing shadows across the yard. It felt like a dream, this quiet peace, a stark contrast to the storm that had raged within me for so long.

Ethan’s gaze drifted from the moon to Lily, then to me. There was a tenderness in his eyes, a deep well of understanding that had slowly, steadily, chipped away at the walls I’d built around my heart. "She's really settled in, hasn't she?" he murmured, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through me.

I nodded, a lump forming in my throat. "She loves it here. And… I think she loves you." The words felt fragile, still new, still a little unbelievable.
