The air in the old farmhouse felt different tonight. It wasn't just the scent of woodsmoke from the hearth, or the faint, sweet perfume of the honeysuckle climbing the porch trellis. It was a shift, subtle as a change in the wind, but undeniable. Lily was asleep, her small form a peaceful weight against my chest, her breathing a soft rhythm that had become the soundtrack to my nights. Ethan sat across the room, mending a tear in Lily’s favorite teddy bear, his brow furrowed in concentration, the lamplight catching the silver threads that were beginning to weave through his dark hair.
For so long, the house had felt like a museum, a collection of memories I wasn't sure I wanted to revisit. My parents, gone. My marriage, a casualty of time and distance and unspoken resentments. And then there was Ethan, a ghost from a life I’d tried to outrun, a ghost I’d accused of a cruelty I now understood was born of his own fear. The chasm that had opened between us two years ago had felt as wide and impassable as the Grand Canyon. But tonight, sitting here, watching him with Lily’s bear, that chasm felt…smaller. Bridgeable.
He looked up, catching my gaze, and offered a small, hesitant smile. It was a smile that held a thousand unspoken apologies, a thousand shared memories, and a flicker of something new, something hopeful.
