The air in the old farmhouse kitchen had a new kind of quiet, a soft hum that settled between us like a comfortable blanket. It was the quiet of shared meals, of Lily’s sleepy sighs from the room upstairs, of the rhythm of life slowly finding its footing again. But beneath that calm, I knew there was still a tremor, a phantom ache from the past that I hadn't quite managed to smooth away. Ethan sensed it too. He always did.
He was sitting at the worn oak table, tracing the grain with his fingertip, his brow furrowed in a way that made my heart clench. He’d been distant since Marcus Thorne’s unsettling appearance at the town fair, his usual easy smile replaced by a thoughtful, almost troubled expression. I’d tried to brush it off, to tell myself it was just the shock of seeing Marcus after so long, but the truth was, a part of me had also been waiting for Ethan to finally lay it all out. The unspoken history between us, the ghost of the man who had broken my heart and then disappeared, still lingered in the shadows.
He looked up then, his blue eyes, usually so warm and open, clouded with a familiar pain. "You're still thinking about him, aren't you?" he asked softly, his voice barely a whisper.
