The scent of honeysuckle, thick and sweet, hung heavy in the air, a perfume Mary Beth hadn’t realized she’d missed so desperately. It tangled with the fainter, more antiseptic smell of lemon polish, a constant reminder of Ethan’s diligent care for her parents’ home. It was a home that now felt like both a sanctuary and a cage, filled with the echoes of laughter and the sharp edges of memory. Lily, bless her little heart, was oblivious to the emotional minefield her mother navigated. She was currently engaged in a fierce battle with a ladybug on the porch railing, her brow furrowed in concentration, her tiny finger nudging the iridescent shell.
Ethan emerged from the garage, wiping grease from his hands with a rag. He’d been tinkering with the old lawnmower, a necessary evil in this sprawling, unruly garden. His smile, when he saw Lily, was genuine and soft, a stark contrast to the guardedness that had once shadowed his eyes when he looked at me. He knelt beside her, his voice a low rumble that always seemed to soothe the frantic beat of my heart.
“Having a tough time there, bug catcher?” he asked, his gaze flicking to me for a fleeting moment.
