Chapter 12
Confronting the Ghost
Mary Beth has a direct conversation with Marcus, clarifying her present and future. She firmly, though perhaps kindly, rejects his advances, choosing a different path.
The air in the old study felt thick, heavy with unspoken words and the ghosts of decisions made long ago. Sunlight, usually so cheerful as it streamed through the tall windows, seemed to fall in muted shafts, illuminating dust motes dancing in the stillness. It was all very impressive, I supposed, if you were impressed by that sort of thing. But as he spoke, I found myself watching the way his eyes flickered around the room, taking in the familiar, yet now subtly changed, surroundings. He wasn’t seeing *my* home; he was seeing the home he’d once known, the one he’d walked away from.
