Lily's Intuition
Lily, sensing the tension, instinctively favors Ethan. Her clear preference for him provides Mary Beth with a much-needed perspective on who truly cares for them.
Lily’s small hand, sticky with berry juice from the jam she’d insisted on helping me make, clutched mine as we walked through the sun-dappled woods. The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a perfume that had always settled my soul, even when my heart felt like a clenched fist. It had been a long time since I’d felt that ease, that sense of belonging that seeped from the very roots of this place. Now, with Lily tucked safely beside me, it was starting to bloom again, tentative but persistent.
We were heading towards the old creek, a place Lily had discovered on her own a few days ago, a tiny explorer charting her own territory. Ethan had mentioned he might be down there, fixing a section of the old wooden bridge that had been weathered by too many seasons. I’d hesitated, a knot of old anxieties tightening in my chest. Seeing him, being around him, it was still a delicate dance, one I wasn’t sure I was ready for. But Lily’s eagerness was a powerful current, and I couldn’t deny her that simple joy.
“Ethan said he has a new toy for me, Mommy!” Lily announced, her voice bright and singsong. She bounced on the balls of her feet, her pigtails flying.
