Lily, her tiny hands sticky with jam, was meticulously arranging her collection of smooth, grey stones on the table. Ethan sat opposite her, a gentle smile playing on his lips as he watched her serious concentration. He’d been here, in this house, for weeks now, and the initial awkwardness had slowly, surely, melted away. It was a quiet kind of thawing, like ice giving way to spring.

Lily’s laughter, light and unburdened, filled the space, and Ethan’s low, rumbling chuckle answered her.
