The air still held the acrid tang of smoke, a ghostly shroud clinging to the wounded peaks. Where once towering pines had scraped the sky, now stood skeletal remains, their charred limbs reaching like desperate hands towards a bruised dawn. The avalanche had swept through their hidden sanctuary with a ferocity that defied comprehension, leaving behind a landscape of devastation that echoed the turmoil in Jannah’s heart. Yet, even in the face of such ruin, a fragile flicker of life persisted.

Arthur found Jannah by the skeletal remains of their shared shelter, her fingers tracing the rough, blackened bark of a fallen fir. Her face, usually alight with the vibrant joy of the mountains, was etched with a profound sorrow, her eyes the color of a stormy sky. He knelt beside her, his own exhaustion a dull ache beneath the gnawing worry for her. He reached out, not to touch, but to hover his hand just above hers, offering a silent communion of shared grief.

“It was so beautiful, Arthur,” she whispered, her voice a dry rustle of leaves. “The way the sunlight used to spill through the needles. The scent of resin after a rain.” She looked at him, her gaze searching. “It feels like a dream that’s been shattered.”
