Chapter 8
A Father's Legacy
More clues emerge: a hidden map fragment, a locket with an unfamiliar inscription. Caleb realizes his father wasn't just seeking gold, but something far more significant.
The brittle parchment crackled under my thumb, each whisper of its movement a betrayal of the silence I craved. It was a fragment, no bigger than my palm, salvaged from the lining of Silas’s old saddlebag. Not a map, not in the conventional sense. More of a sketch, a series of jagged lines and symbols that spoke of terrain I’d only begun to understand. The mist, a constant, damp shroud, seemed to press in, muffling the world, as if trying to keep these secrets from escaping.
Beside it lay the locket. I’d found it tucked away in a false bottom of the same bag, a place I’d overlooked countless times before, lost in my own grief. It was heavier than it looked, intricately carved silver, cool against my skin. Silas had always worn it, a habit I’d dismissed as sentimentality. Now, it felt like a key. The inscription on the inside, however, was unlike anything I’d ever seen – a delicate, looping script that seemed to flow like water, a stark contrast to the blocky letters I knew. It wasn't English, nor Spanish, nor any language I could place.
I turned the locket over and over, the faint light of my lantern glinting off its polished surface. A father’s legacy, Lyra had called it. But what kind of legacy left behind such riddles? The whispers of treasure had drawn me here, a desperate hope of finding something to fill the gnawing emptiness left by Sarah and little Lily. But Silas hadn’t been a gold prospector. He’d been a man of the mountains, a man who spoke of them with a reverence I’d never quite understood.
