The damn mist clung to me like a shroud, thick and suffocating, just like the grief that had settled in my bones. Oakhaven had offered little solace, only more questions and the prickling sensation of being watched. Lyra’s words, cryptic as they were, echoed in my mind: "The mountain remembers. The mist hides, but it also guards." Guards against what? Or whom?

Yesterday, I’d been on the verge of a breakthrough. Silas’s journal, a tattered collection of scribbles and half-formed maps, had pointed me towards a jagged outcrop barely visible through the swirling white. It was a place where the wind howled like a banshee and the rocks themselves seemed to whisper secrets. I’d spent hours tracing the faint lines, comparing them to the unforgiving terrain, a flicker of hope igniting in my chest. My father had been here. He’d left a trail, a breadcrumb to whatever he’d been chasing.

But this morning, the trail was gone. Not just obscured by the ever-present fog, but *gone*. The narrow ledge I’d carefully navigated yesterday was a sheer, impassable wall of loose scree. It looked as if a giant had simply scraped it clean, leaving behind a chaotic jumble of rocks that tumbled down the mountainside with every gust of wind. My stomach lurched. This wasn’t natural. This was deliberate.
