The mist clung to Oakhaven like a shroud, damp and cold, seeping through the worn wool of my duster. It muffled the sounds of the few souls who called this place home, turning their hushed conversations into indistinct murmurs. My father’s locket, cool against my skin beneath my shirt, was a constant reminder of what I was chasing, or perhaps, what was chasing me.

My inquiries had led me to the edge of town, to a small, sturdy cabin that seemed to hum with an older, quieter energy. A wisp of smoke, fragrant with herbs, rose from its chimney. This, I’d been told, was the dwelling of Lyra Meadowsweet, the keeper of Oakhaven’s lore, the one who saw through the mist when others were blinded.
