The crumpled journal page felt brittle in my gloved hand, the ink a faded testament to my father’s restless spirit. “The Whispering Oak, where the north wind bites deepest,” it read. North wind. In this godforsaken town, it felt like a permanent resident, a constant, icy breath against my skin. I’d spent the better part of the morning tracing the rough-hewn paths Silas Stone had scribbled down, each step a gamble, each turn a descent deeper into the suffocating embrace of the mist. It clung to everything, a shroud that muffled sound and distorted sight, turning familiar shapes into monstrous phantoms.

My horse, a sturdy buckskin named Ghost, snorted, his breath pluming white in the frigid air. He was as uneasy as I was, his ears swiveling, catching phantom sounds that my own ears couldn't quite decipher. We were miles from Oakhaven, the town that felt more like a forgotten purgatory than a settlement. The whispers of the treasure had drawn me here, a siren song that had pulled me from the ashes of my former life. But now, with every step deeper into this wilderness, a different kind of whisper began to surface – the echo of my father’s voice, a phantom limb of memory I couldn't quite shake.

The journal spoke of a specific oak, ancient and gnarled, its branches reaching like skeletal fingers towards the perpetually grey sky. I’d seen plenty of oaks, of course. They were as common as the moss that carpeted the forest floor. But this one… this one was meant to be different. I scanned the treeline, my eyes, accustomed to the sharp clarity of the plains, struggling to penetrate the milky haze. Then, I saw it.
