The small, rented room in the back of the general store smelled perpetually of dust and despair. It was a scent I was becoming all too familiar with, a musty perfume that clung to my clothes and settled in my lungs like the mountain’s ever-present mist. I’d spent the better part of the morning sifting through the meager belongings Silas Stone, my father, had left behind. Sparse was an understatement. A bedroll, a dented tin cup, a spare pair of boots, and a saddlebag that contained little more than dried jerky and a coil of rope. All the detritus of a life lived on the move, a life I was beginning to understand was far more complex than the stoic, quiet man I’d known.

I sat on the edge of the lumpy mattress, the weak afternoon light filtering through the grimy windowpane. The silence of the room pressed in, amplifying the frantic beat of my own heart. This was it. The chance to finally understand. To unravel the threads of mystery that had woven themselves around Silas Stone, the man who was both my father and a stranger.
