Thorne's Desperation

The air in the cavern was thick with the smell of damp earth and something else… something ancient and mineral. My breath plumed in front of me, a stark white against the gloom, and each rasp felt like a betrayal of the silence. My father’s locket, cool against my skin, was a familiar weight, a tiny tether to a life that felt impossibly distant. The shrine itself was a jumble of moss-covered stones, carved with symbols I couldn’t decipher, their meaning lost to the ages. But the feeling… that was potent. A thrumming in the very rock beneath my worn boots, a sense of deep, slumbering power.

I was tracing a particularly intricate carving on a fallen pillar, the rough stone scraping against my fingertips, when the sound came. Not a footfall, not a rustle of leaves – this was a scrape, a drag, like something heavy being pulled across stone. My hand instinctively went to the worn leather grip of my Colt. The shadows in the cavern, already deep, seemed to coalesce, to thicken into something more substantial.

Then he spoke, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate from the very walls. “You shouldn’t be here, boy.”
