The air thickened, growing heavy with the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and wild. The passage, narrow and slick with perpetual condensation, had twisted and turned, each step a gamble against the slippery stone. For hours, or perhaps days – time had become a fluid thing in this suffocating darkness – I’d followed the faint, almost imperceptible markings my father had etched into the rock. They were subtle, easily missed by anyone not looking for them, a private language spoken between a father and son across the chasm of death. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the oppressive silence. Every shadow seemed to writhe, every drip of water a whisper of warning.

Then, the passage opened.

It wasn't a gentle unfolding, but a violent tearing of the mountain’s veil. I stumbled out, blinking against a light that was not sunlight, nor moonlight, but something far more profound. Before me lay a cavern of impossible scale, its ceiling lost in a swirling, phosphorescent mist that pulsed with a soft, internal glow. Waterfalls, impossibly thin and shimmering like spun glass, cascaded down walls slick with a thousand years of mineral deposits, their descent silenced by the sheer immensity of the space. They didn’t roar; they sang, a low, resonant hum that vibrated in my bones, a melody older than memory.
