The cold bit at my exposed skin, a familiar ache that had settled deep in my bones since the fire. It was a constant reminder, a ghost limb that throbbed with absence. I’d been riding for hours, the mist clinging to me like a shroud, muffling the world, isolating me in a way that felt both terrifying and strangely comforting. Oakhaven was a speck on the map, a place most folks in the lowlands wouldn’t even know existed. But my father, Silas Stone, had known it. He’d whispered its name before… before everything.

The locket, a tarnished piece of silver he’d always worn, hung heavy around my neck. I’d found it clutched in his hand, a final, desperate grasp. The inner plate, which I’d assumed was solid, sprang open. Beneath it, etched with finer lines than I’d ever noticed, was not a picture, but a series of symbols. They weren’t letters, not any language I recognized. They were geometric, angular, with a strange, almost serpentine quality to them. My breath hitched. These symbols… I’d seen them before.
