Chapter 12
Lyra's Counsel
Caleb returns to Lyra. She reveals the 'treasure' is not gold, but a sacred place, a source of life tied to his family's lineage and the mountain's spirit. Thorne seeks to control it.
The wind had a different song tonight, a low, mournful hum that seemed to weave itself through the very timbers of Lyra Meadowsweet’s cabin. It had been days since I’d last seen her, days spent chasing phantom whispers and the chilling certainty that Elias Thorne was never far behind. The mist had been my only companion, a silent, suffocating shroud that seemed to mock my every step, mirroring the fog that had settled over my own soul since Sarah and the boys were gone. The air in the cabin was thick with the scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke, a comforting contrast to the biting chill outside. I’d half-expected her to scold me, to tell me I was a fool for venturing so deep into the mountains, especially with Thorne on my trail. But she simply gestured to a stool opposite her.
“You look like a man who’s wrestled with more than just the mountain,” she said, her voice a low rumble, like stones shifting in a riverbed.
