Chapter 8
Shade's Dilemma
Marcus 'Shade' Johnson, a pragmatic member of The Family, witnesses the escalating violence and corruption. He grapples with his loyalty, fearing for his future and considering a perilous path toward survival, perhaps even redemption.
The stale air of the back room hung heavy, thick with the scent of cheap whiskey and desperation. Marcus Johnson, known on the streets as ‘Shade,’ nursed a lukewarm beer, the condensation slick against his calloused fingers. He watched Garland Jeffers hold court, a king on his crumbling throne, his charm a thin veneer over a core of pure ice. Garland’s voice, smooth as polished obsidian, wove tales of power and profit, each word a gilded chain binding the men around him tighter.
“This town,” Garland declared, gesturing with a manicured hand towards the grimy window that offered a sliver of the dying twilight, “it’s a carcass. And we’re the vultures picking it clean. Gary owes us. It owes us for every factory that rusted shut, every man thrown out on his ass. We’re just collecting what’s rightfully ours.”
Shade swallowed, the beer tasting like ash. He’d heard it all before, the justifications, the twisted logic that painted their predatory existence as some kind of righteous reclamation. But lately, the rhetoric felt hollower, the shadows it cast deeper and more menacing. He’d seen the fear in the eyes of the shopkeepers on Broadway, the way they flinched when Lam Carter, Garland’s hulking enforcer, sauntered past. He’d seen the desperation in the faces of the addicts strung out in the alleys, their meager earnings siphoned off by Bobby Raynes and his crew, their lives reduced to a transactional exchange of desperation for a fleeting oblivion.
