The neon glow of the bar sign, a sickly green against the bruised twilight sky, flickered erratically. Inside, the air hung thick with stale cigarette smoke and the murmur of hushed conversations. Garland Jeffers, impeccably dressed in a suit that seemed to absorb the dim light, nursed a whiskey, his eyes, dark and watchful, scanning the room. He’d built this empire on a foundation of fear, brick by careful brick, but lately, the mortar felt…soft.

Across the sticky tabletop, Bobby Raynes, his younger brother, a man whose ambition was a perpetually restless tide, fidgeted. Bobby’s smile, usually a wide, insincere slash, seemed tighter tonight. "Business is good, Garland," he said, his voice a low rumble. "Real good."

Garland took a slow sip, the amber liquid burning a familiar path down his throat. "It should be," he replied, his tone deceptively mild. "We’ve squeezed every last drop from this town’s dying heart. No one’s left to squeeze."
