The fluorescent lights of the Gary Police Department buzzed with a tired hum, a sound that had become the soundtrack to Detective Ray Miller’s life. He nursed a lukewarm coffee, the bitter taste a familiar companion to the gnawing unease that had settled in his gut. The city, once a titan of industry, now coughed and sputtered, its steel mills silent monuments to a forgotten glory. And into this decay, like a creeping vine, "The Family" had taken root.
Miller, a man whose face was etched with the lines of too many late nights and too few victories, had been assigned the latest string of "incidents." A shop owner roughed up for not paying protection money. A warehouse vandalized for trying to bypass their “services.” The usual low-level thuggery, he’d thought at first. But the whispers, the way people’s eyes darted away when he asked questions, told a different story. A story of a fear that went deeper than mere intimidation.
His partner, a young rookie named Henderson, fresh out of the academy with an eagerness Miller had long since lost, bounced in his chair. "Anything, Ray?"
