Chapter 18
The Trap is Set
With information from Shade and Karl's covert help, Miller and Vance coordinate a plan. They aim to expose Garland Jeffers and the corrupt officers, setting a trap designed to ensnare The Family.
The air in Detective Ray Miller’s office hung thick with stale cigarette smoke and the metallic tang of desperation. Rain lashed against the grimy windowpanes, mirroring the storm brewing in his gut. Across the scarred oak desk, Eleanor Vance, her face a mask of weary resolve, laid out a crumpled piece of paper. The information was sparse, a whisper from the shadows, but it was enough. Marcus ‘Shade’ Johnson, a man perpetually caught between loyalty and self-preservation, had finally cracked.
“He says Garland’s moving a big shipment tonight,” Eleanor stated, her voice low and steady, a counterpoint to the tremor in Ray’s hands as he picked up the paper. “Something new, something potent. Coming in through the old steel mill docks. And he confirmed it. The usual players will be there, plus a few new faces he doesn’t recognize.”
Ray traced the faded ink with a calloused finger. Shade’s intel had been the missing piece, the thread that could unravel The Family’s carefully woven web of power. For weeks, he and Eleanor had been piecing together fragments, following the invisible trails of fear and illicit cash that snaked through Gary’s decaying heart. Shade’s fear of Garland Jeffers was a palpable thing, a raw nerve that Eleanor had managed to touch, coaxing out the information that could finally bring Garland down.
