The air in Momma’s house was thick with the scent of simmering greens and unspoken anxieties. Sunlight, filtered through grimy lace curtains, painted stripes across the worn linoleum floor. Momma, her back a formidable wall of faded floral print, stirred a pot with a practiced, almost violent, rhythm. Her hands, gnarled like ancient oak roots, moved with a strength that belied her age, a strength that had held ‘The Family’ together through leaner, meaner times.

Victory sat at the chipped Formica table, her gaze fixed on her mother’s stooped shoulders. The silence between them was a well-worn path, trod daily. Victory, ever the watchful guardian, felt the tremors of unease that always preceded a storm within their bloodline. Linda Sue’s secret, a fragile bloom threatening to burst its bud, was the current tempest brewing. Momma’s fierce protectiveness, a shield forged in the fires of desperation, was about to be tested in ways she couldn’t yet fathom.

“He’s late,” Momma grunted, not turning from the stove. Her voice, a gravelly rasp, held a hint of impatience. “Lam. Always late.”
