The air in Silas’s warehouse hung thick with the cloying sweetness of cheap cigars and something else, something metallic and acrid that hinted at raw chemicals. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating stacks of crates that promised a transient wealth. Silas, a man whose girth seemed to defy gravity, lounged on a makeshift throne of upturned barrels, his eyes, dark and intelligent, missing nothing. He was the nexus, the man who fed the hungry maw of Gary’s nascent drug trade, and tonight, his attention was fixed on Karl Jeffers.

Karl shifted uncomfortably under the scrutiny. He wore his usual cheap suit, a size too large, a futile attempt at projecting an authority he hadn’t yet earned. His jaw was tight, his knuckles white where he gripped the worn fabric of his trousers. He knew Silas was a dangerous man, a puppeteer whose strings reached far beyond the grimy confines of this warehouse. Garland, his father, spoke of Silas with a grudging respect, a necessary evil in their grand design. But Karl felt a prickle of something more than respect tonight. It was a cold, calculating assessment that made his skin crawl.

"You're moving product well, Karl," Silas rumbled, his voice a low growl that seemed to vibrate through the concrete floor. He picked a fleck of lint from his silk shirt. "Garland's got a good head on his shoulders, for a man who started with nothing."
