Chapter 14
Mac's Betrayal
Detective James 'Mac' Macallister's corruption is exposed. His acceptance of bribes paints a grim picture of the force, complicating Miller's efforts and deepening the distrust within the community.
The stale air of the precinct house clung to Detective James "Mac" Macallister like the cheap cologne he favored. It was a scent that mingled with desperation and the lingering metallic tang of the city's decay. Outside, Gary, Indiana, bled under a sky the color of a bruised plum, a stark reminder of what it once was and what it was rapidly becoming. Inside, the fluorescent lights hummed a mournful tune, illuminating the chipped paint on the walls and the weary faces of the men who patrolled its desolate streets.
Mac leaned back in his chair, the springs groaning in protest. His gaze, usually sharp and assessing, was clouded with a weariness that went beyond a long shift. He ran a hand over his thinning hair, the rough stubble a stark contrast to the smooth, unmarked bills tucked into his shirt pocket. The weight of them was a familiar burden, a constant hum beneath the surface of his consciousness. He told himself it was for the good of the department, for the survival of the force in a city where the law was becoming as flimsy as a discarded newspaper. He told himself a lot of things.
A shadow fell across his desk. He looked up to see Detective Ray Miller, his face etched with a familiar mix of suspicion and a quiet, burning anger. Miller was a relic, a man who still believed in the badge, in the oath he’d taken. Mac found him both admirable and infuriating.
