The sting of betrayal was a cold, sharp thing, far more potent than the physical pain that had left me gasping for air on that desolate dock. It had been Seajay’s hands, those same hands I’d held so tenderly, that had guided me into the darkness, her voice, once a melody, now a siren’s cruel song leading me to ruin. The memory was a fresh wound, raw and bleeding, but beneath the agony, a different kind of fire began to smolder: a fierce, unwavering resolve. I wouldn’t die here, not like this, not as a pawn in a game I didn’t understand. I would rise, and I would find the truth.
My first steps away from that infernal place were unsteady, each movement a testament to sheer will. The salty air, once intoxicating with the promise of Seajay, now tasted like ash. I stumbled through the pre-dawn gloom, the city a labyrinth of shadows and whispers, each corner a potential hiding place for the specter of Rayan Blackheart, and the ghost of the woman I thought I knew.
The address scribbled on the crumpled napkin, the one Seajay had pressed into my hand with such urgency, felt like a lifeline. It was a dingy apartment building in the less-savory part of town, a place far removed from the perfumed elegance I’d associated with her. Every instinct screamed caution, but my heart, fractured as it was, still yearned for answers. I needed to understand what had driven her to this, what kind of terror Rayan Blackheart wielded to make her sacrifice me.
