Chapter 6
A Lover's Gambit
Under immense pressure from Rayan, Seajay makes a devastating choice. She plans to lure Romero into a trap, a desperate act of self-preservation against her tormentor.
The air in the small apartment hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket woven from Seajay’s fear and the lingering scent of cheap jasmine. It was a scent I had once associated with her, with stolen moments and whispered promises, but now it clung to the shadows like a shroud. Rayan’s threat had been a cold, sharp blade against my throat, a promise of consequences that had rippled through Seajay’s very being. I saw it in the tremor of her hands, the stark terror etched into her usually luminous eyes. She was trapped, a bird with clipped wings caught in a predator’s snare, and I, in my foolish, hopeful blindness, had been so eager to fly into her cage.

Understand what? That the woman I’d fallen for, the woman who had ignited a fire in my soul, was a pawn in a game I couldn't comprehend? That her past wasn't just a shadow, but a ravenous beast waiting to devour us both? Rayan’s words, delivered with a chilling calm that was far more terrifying than any roar, echoed in my mind. “One more step, Valentin, and she pays the price. Make her choose. And she will choose wisely.” He hadn’t even needed to threaten me directly. He knew Seajay’s heart, knew the depth of her fear, and he wielded it like a weapon.
