The jasmine scent, usually a comforting balm, now felt cloying, a suffocating reminder of the life I was trying so desperately to build. It clung to the curtains, to the air, to me, a ghost of the sweetness that had once drawn Romero in. Tonight, the sweetness was laced with a bitter, metallic tang of fear. Rayan’s call had come an hour ago, a phantom on the line, his voice a silken threat that slithered through the receiver and coiled around my throat.

“Still enjoying your little escape, Seajay?” His voice, smooth as polished obsidian, held a dangerous amusement. “Don’t forget who owns the garden, my dear. Some flowers bloom only for their gardener.”

The line had gone dead before I could even form a response, leaving me with the echo of his words and a cold dread that seeped into my bones. He knew. He always knew. It was as if he had eyes everywhere, a sixth sense for my attempts at freedom. This wasn’t just a casual warning; it was a pronouncement, a tightening of the invisible chains he’d fastened around me years ago.
