The air still tasted of smoke and something metallic, something that clung to the back of my throat like a bitter truth. I’d woken to the distant wail of sirens, a mournful song that seemed to echo the emptiness inside me. My head throbbed, a dull, insistent drumbeat against the ringing in my ears. Every muscle screamed in protest as I pushed myself up, the rough ground scraping against my skin. The world swam into focus, a blurry tableau of overturned furniture, shattered glass, and the lingering scent of Seajay’s jasmine perfume, now tainted by the acrid tang of violence.

It had all happened so fast, a sickening blur of Rayan’s fury and Seajay’s terrified eyes. My trust, so absolute, so foolishly offered, lay in pieces around me, just like the porcelain vase that had once graced her windowsill. I remembered the glint of steel, the sickening thud, and then… darkness. Rayan’s laughter, a cruel, triumphant sound, was the last thing I heard before the world went black.

But I was alive. Against all odds, I was alive. And that was a dangerous thing for Rayan. He’d wanted me gone, erased, a forgotten casualty in his warped game of possession. He’d underestimated me. He’d underestimated the power of a love that had been so thoroughly broken, so brutally betrayed.
